SKF Restructures Automotive Seal Production: Elgin Plant Transfers Operations

SKF Restructures Automotive Seal Operations: Elgin Plant Transitions Production

SKF AB, a global leader in bearings and sealing solutions headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden, is taking further steps in its ongoing restructuring of the seal business. The move is largely influenced by persistent weakness in the North American automotive sector and SKF’s focus on consolidating global production for efficiency.

Transition of Automotive Seal Production from Elgin

The SKF Elgin facility in Illinois—formerly known as Chicago Rawhide (CR Seals)—is undergoing a major shift. The plant will discontinue automotive seal production, with operations being redistributed across other SKF manufacturing sites:

  • SKF Sealing Solutions Hobart, Oklahoma

  • SKF Sealing Solutions Seneca, Kansas

  • SKF Guadalajara, Mexico (formerly CR Mexicana), which manufactures a wide range of automotive, truck, and industrial seals

This redistribution is intended to strengthen SKF’s global supply chain, reduce redundancy, and enhance operational flexibility.

Impact on the Elgin Workforce

The Elgin plant, which came fully under CR control in 1998 before becoming part of SKF, will see a reduction in staff from 430 to 270 employees. SKF has announced restructuring charges of SEK 35 million in the current quarter and an additional SEK 25 million in 2009. From 2010 onward, the company expects annual savings of approximately SEK 30 million.

Historical Context: SKF and Chicago Rawhide Integration

SKF’s relationship with Chicago Rawhide (CR Industries) dates back to 1990, when the acquisition began a series of strategic adjustments:

  • 2001: SKF integrated CR Seals into its broader divisions, placing automotive seals under SKF Automotive and spreading global operations.

  • 2002: Closure of the CR bearing seal plant in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, with production transferred to RFT in Italy.

  • 2003: Closure of the CR industrial seal plant in Franklin, North Carolina.

  • 2005: SKF transitioned to a global monobranding strategy, retiring the Chicago Rawhide and CR brands in favor of the unified SKF brand.

  • 2005: Closure of the CR automotive seal plant in Springfield, South Dakota, with production consolidated at Elgin—a facility now also transferring operations elsewhere.

SKF’s Strategy in a Shifting Market

SKF’s restructuring is part of its long-term strategy to adapt to global industry challenges. By consolidating seal production in fewer, more efficient facilities, the company aims to:

  • Optimize manufacturing costs

  • Strengthen global competitiveness

  • Maintain consistent product quality across markets

  • Adjust to declining demand in certain regional automotive sectors

This approach underscores SKF’s commitment to resilience and adaptability in the evolving bearings and seals industry.
